How to choose the perfect saree for your body type?

How to choose the perfect saree for your body type?

The beauty of a saree lies in the fact that it fits everyone regardless of size, shape or age. However, draping a saree based on your body shape will make you look stylish and confident. While we appreciate that everyone looks different, has different body shapes and has different personal styles, having a little knowledge goes a long way!

The aim of this blog is to help you identify your body shape, understand the colours and patterns that suits you so that you can pick up a saree accordingly. What looks good on one person may not always look good on you. Before we dive into the blog, remember that you are beautiful and unique no matter what shape you are in. Be yourself! Love yourself!

What is a body shape?

A body shape refers to the structure of your body and is not related to your weight. It is determined by the ratio or size of your shoulder/bust, waist and hips.

The common body shapes are:

  • Hourglass
  • Pear / Triangle
  • Apple / Inverted Triangle
  • Rectangle

Hourglass:

You have an hourglass figure if your chest and hips are of the same size with a well-defined waist.

What to wear:

Choose thin Sarees in dark colours with minimal embroidery that will show off your natural curves elegantly, such as Georgette, Chiffon, Satin, or Crepe. Pair them up with a strappy or sleeveless blouse.

Pear and Triangle

Pear and Triangle:

If your lower body is wider than your upper body, you are pear or triangle shaped.

What to wear:

Since your upper and lower bodies are different sizes, you should choose sarees that emphasise your upper body while drawing attention away from your lower body. Choose blouses with patterns, frills, and boat necklines to give the impression of more volume in the upper body. Stick to lightweight sarees like Soft Silk, Mysore Silk and Organza. Avoid wearing sarees with big patterns. Colours such as pink, orange, green, brown will look great on you.

Apple and Inverted Triangle:

If your upper body is wider or broader than your lower body, you have an apple or inverted triangle shaped body.

What to wear:

When you have wider shoulders, fuller bust and narrow hips you should highlight your lower body and define your waist. Opt for blouses in darker shapes and pair them up with Bright Sarees. Wear belts or any accessories which will define your waist. You can also try different draping styles, such as a dhoti drape or a can-can skirt with a saree draped over it.

Rectangle

Rectangle:

If your hips, waist and bust are around the same size then you have a rectangle shaped body.

What to wear:

Banarasi Sarees, Kanchipuram Silk Saree with traditional motifs and a heavily embroidered blouse will look best on a rectangle-shaped body. Since you do not have many curves, create an illusion of curves and a defined waist. Always pleat the pallu rather than allowing it to flow freely. Choose a sleeveless or off-shoulder blouse to show off your toned arms.

Once you learn to dress your shape, your wardrobe will no longer be filled with sarees you are unsure of or dislike. Instead, you will have beautiful drapes, you can’t wait to showcase. You will understand why certain sarees don’t suit you and stay away from them.

At Sundari Silks, we have a wide range of Sarees, Kurtas, Salwar and Accessories in striking colours and patterns to suit every body type. If you still have a hard time figuring out your body type, reach out to us and we will be glad to help you.
