Traced back to the Indus Valley civilisation during the 5th century, dhotis were worn for comfort and also for its adaptability to the hot tropical weather of our country. Named after the Sanskrit word "Dhauta", it denotes the five knots that were used for draping the garment around the waist. An integral garment for kings, nobles and poets of ancient India, it is now hand-woven in cotton and silk and embellished with elegant palettes and patterns, and elaborate borders using gold threads.
