How to identify your skin undertone?

Have you ever felt like an outfit looked great on a mannequin or on a friend but did not look flattering on you when you tried it on? That's most likely due to the fact that the colour did not complement your undertone. Undertones help in choosing the right clothes, makeup, hair colour and jewellery for you. In this blog, we'll talk about colours, undertones, and how to figure out what undertone you have so you could pick colours that look great on you the next time you go shopping.

What is an undertone?

Skin tone or skin complexion refers to the colour of the skin on the surface, whereas undertone refers to the more subtle shade beneath the surface. While the surface colour of your skin can change due to sun exposure and other external factors, the undertone does not as it is the permanent underlying colour of your skin.

Determining your undertone

There are three types of undertones

  • Warm Undertone
  • Cool Undertone
  • Neutral Undertone

Here are a few ways you can find out your undertone.

Test 1 - Veins

Observe the colour of the veins in your wrist.

  • Warm undertone: If the veins under your skin appear greenish
  • Cool undertone: If the veins under your skin appear bluish or purple
  • Neutral: If the veins under your skin appear neutral in colour

Determining your undertone

Test 2 - Jewellery

Another easy way to find out your skin undertone is by seeing what type of jewellery suits you better.

  • If gold jewellery suits you better, you’ve got a warm undertone.
  • If silver jewellery suits you better, you’ve got a cool undertone.
  • If you look fabulous in both gold and silver jewellery, you’ve got a neutral undertone.

Test 3 - Sun’s effect on your skin

How does your skin feel when you go outside for a walk on a sunny day?

  • If your skin tans easily, you have a warm undertone.
  • If your skin burns and turns pink, you have a cool undertone.
  • If neither of the two happens, then let’s just say there are a lot of people jealous of you.

Colours and undertones

  • Warm Undertone - Red, Orange, Yellow-Green, Yellow, Amber, Brown, Coral, Peach
  • Cool Undertone - Green, Blue, Violet, Blue-Green, Red-Violet, Purple
  • Neutral Undertone - Every colour will suit you!

These are the three simplest methods to find out your undertone. It is very common to have several undertones in your skin. Though having more than one undertone might make it difficult to find the perfect dress, makeup and accessories, you can in that case be your own artist and mix and match to create different looks based on your moods.
